Research - Mean Girls Analysis

Setting and Mise En Scene-

This image shows the setting and Mise En Scene of Mean Girls. The setting is placed in a shopping centre, which is a very stereotypical place of where you would see a group of girls. We mostly associate teenage girls as having the hobby of shopping with their friends, which is what makes this setting so typical. Mise En Scene is shown in this scene by the outfits that the girls are wearing, each one is wearing pink which represents the innocence of them, but because they are quite tight tops, the innocence is taken away a little. Three of them are also wearing short miniskirts and have their hair and makeup done, this is a very typical view that we have of teenage girls. However, the girl on the end is wearing a big baggy pink top and jeans, she is also standing with her arms folded is frowning, which shows that she isn’t very comfortable with the situation.

Camerawork-

These images show mid shots of one of the characters blowing a kiss to a group of boys. From the use of the mid shot we can see that there is a group of boys and one looking very interested in the girl. This shot shows the girl as being very stereotypical as she is a blonde teenager wearing a tight small top and blowing kisses to boys, this is typical of a teenage girl as they are often looking for the attention of boys.

A long shot is also used to show the group of girls walking down the school corridors. From the use of the long shot, we can see that the girls are in the middle of everyone walking through which seems like they think they ‘run the school’. This is typical as we usually associate wit there being one group of girls in a school that think they are above anyone else, usually in teen angst films. Also, everyone else has stepped back for them and is looking at them as if they are something very special and inferior to everyone else.
This shot also shows the main characters that are in the film, we see that the three girls from the right love themselves and all look very comfortable, they seem to want all of the attention on them as they are in short skirts and dresses with their legs bent so their posture looks more threatening. This is stereotypical as most teenage girls compete with each other on wanting to be and look the best. However, even though the girl on the left is wearing the same, she doesn’t look very comfortable with the situation as she is just standing very awkwardly. She looks like she is looking at the other girls for conformation on how to act so that she looks like she is standing out to everyone else.

This image shows the other main characters in the film, the girl is dressed in dark colours such as black and grey. Her hair is also messy which shows that she doesn’t really care what she looks like. This character is represented as a countertype because most girls like to wear pretty colours and have their hair and makeup done nicely. The boy is also shown as being a countertype as we would expect a male to be hanging around with other males and doing things like playing football. Also, he is wearing very feminine colours such as reds and white as we would usually expect boys to wear dark coloured clothing.
